Okinawa Main Island in 3 Nights and 4 Days: A Model Drive Through the South, Center and North
この記事をシェア XFacebookLINE

Want to see the whole main island of Okinawa in 3 nights and 4 days, but not sure how to fit the south, the center and the north together without exhausting yourself? The island is long from north to south: even on the expressway, it takes about 2 hours one way to get from Naha to Churaumi Aquarium in the north. If you try to cover too much, you end up spending most of your trip inside the car.

This article is a 4-day model course by rental car: pick up your car at Naha Airport, drive the south on Day 1, the central west coast on Day 2 and the north on Day 3, then head back to Naha on Day 4 to return the car. It is written from the driver’s point of view, with how to think about where to stay, driving times for each day, when to refuel and how much time to leave before returning the car. For details on each area, follow the links to our existing articles.

The Big Picture of the 3-Night, 4-Day Course

Model Schedule for the 4 Days

The route moves a little farther north each day, from south to central to north, and returns to Naha on the last day. The south can be covered in half a day, which makes it ideal for your arrival day. On Day 2, the sunset on the west coast is the highlight of the day, and on Day 3 you head into the north.

Day 1 (South) Pick up the car at Naha Airport → Nirai Kanai Bridge → Sefa Utaki → Cape Chinen Park → hotel in Naha (night 1)
Day 2 (Central) A central-area beach → Cape Zanpa → Cape Maeda → Onna-no-Eki → sunset at Manzamo → hotel in Onna Village (night 2)
Day 3 (North) Churaumi Aquarium → Bise Fukugi Tree Road → Kouri Island → hotel in the Nago / Motobu area (night 3)
Day 4 (North → Naha) Nakijin Castle Ruins → Sesoko Island → Okinawa Expressway to Naha → refuel → return at our Naha Airport store

The rental period is 4 days, from the day you pick up the car to the day you return it. When you book, set your pick-up and return times based on your arrival and departure flights. You can check rates on our price page and the process on our how to rent page.

How to Think About Where to Stay

You can either return to the same hotel every night or move to a new one to match each day’s destination. If you go back and forth to the north, you spend several hours each morning and evening on the expressway or Route 58, so this course has you change hotels to match where you are going. You will pack and unpack more often, but morning drives get shorter and you avoid long drives after dark.

Night 1: Naha Even if you are tired from arriving, the city has plenty of places to eat, and getting started the next morning is easy
Night 2: Onna Village After watching the sunset at Manzamo, you avoid a long drive in the dark (more on this below)
Night 3: Nago / Motobu Nago city center has many supermarkets, restaurants and gas stations, and Motobu is close to Churaumi Aquarium and Sesoko Island

Parking availability, parking fees and check-in times differ from hotel to hotel. Since you will be arriving by car, be sure to check parking when you book.

Driving Time Guide

The table below shows the approximate driving times confirmed in each of our articles. All times assume no traffic. Route 58 tends to get congested in the evening and on weekends.

Naha Airport → main sights in Nanjo City About 40 min to 1 hour
Naha Airport → Manzamo About 1 hour to 1 hour 15 min
Naha Airport → Kyoda IC About 1 hour to 1 hour 15 min (Naha IC to Kyoda IC is about 57 km)
Naha Airport → Churaumi Aquarium About 2 hours (using the expressway)
Churaumi Aquarium → Kouri Bridge About 30 to 40 min
Motobu Town → Manzamo About 50 min

Day 1: Ocean Views and a World Heritage Site in the South

Pick Up Your Car at Naha Airport and Set Off

From the arrivals lobby, take the free shuttle to our Naha Airport store and pick up your car. If you complete online check-in beforehand, the counter procedures are shorter and you can leave sooner. The Naha Airport store is open 8:00-20:00, every day of the year.

For example, if your flight lands just before noon, you can leave around 12:30 and be at your Naha hotel in the 5 p.m. range.

12:30 Leave UMUI Rent a Car Naha Airport store → head toward Nanjo City
13:30 Nirai Kanai Bridge (driving down from Prefectural Route 86 to Route 331)
14:00 Buy your Sefa Utaki ticket at the Nanjo City Regional Products Center → Sefa Utaki (1 to 1.5 hours)
15:45 Cape Chinen Park, with views of Kudaka Island (about 30 min)
16:30 Souvenirs and a snack at the Products Center → to your Naha hotel

Times are approximate. If you arrive late, give priority to Nirai Kanai Bridge and Cape Chinen Park, and save Sefa Utaki for another day.

If you drive Nirai Kanai Bridge in Nanjo City heading down from the “Tsukishiro” side of Prefectural Route 86 toward Route 331, the sea stays in front of you the whole way. However, you cannot stop or park on the bridge. It is easy to speed up while looking at the view, so keep a safe distance from the car ahead. The bridge may be closed during typhoons or bad weather.

About 5 minutes by car from the bridge, just behind the Nanjo City Regional Products Center, is Cape Chinen Park, which juts out into the Pacific. It is a relaxing park where you can see Kudaka Island up close. If you park at the Products Center, you can explore on foot.

For how to drive the bridge, what to see at Cape Chinen Park and tips for lunch, see our half-day southern Okinawa drive article.

Sefa Utaki, a World Heritage site regarded as the highest sacred place of the Ryukyu Kingdom, sells tickets not at the entrance but at the ticket office attached to the Nanjo City Regional Products Center. The last ticket sale is at 17:15 from March to October and 16:45 from November to February. Also, in 2026 the rest days are November 9 to 11, when you cannot enter the site (in 2027, June 5 to 7 are planned). Be sure to check before you leave that your travel dates do not overlap.

[Limited access from November 2, 2026 to January 5, 2027] According to Nanjo City, drainage work during this period means visitors can only enter Sefa Utaki as far as the entrance area (Ujoguchi, the Kudaka Island worship point), and admission is scheduled to be free. You will not be able to reach Sangui or the other inner sites, so if your trip falls in this period, check Nanjo City’s latest notice.

On Day 2, leave your Naha hotel and head north on Route 58. In the morning, we recommend spending some time at the seaside at Ginowan Tropical Beach, about 30 minutes from central Naha, or at Araha Beach in Chatan. The swimming season is announced as running until October 30 at Tropical Beach, and until November 30 in fiscal 2026 at Araha Beach (an extension in November is undecided). Depending on the time of year, swimming may not be possible, so decide in advance, based on your travel month, whether this is a swimming day or a day for strolling and a café.

Swimming hours, parking and jellyfish precautions are in our article on beaches within an hour of Naha.

Cape Zanpa, Cape Maeda and Onna-no-Eki

After lunch, head to Cape Zanpa in Yomitan Village. This scenic spot has continuous Ryukyu limestone cliffs; walking around is free, and there is free parking. From there, go north on Route 58 to Cape Maeda in Onna Village, then on to Onna-no-Eki Nakayukui Market. Parking at Cape Maeda is paid and gets crowded on weekends. At Onna-no-Eki, choosing your souvenirs first lets you focus on the view at Manzamo.

9:30 Leave your Naha hotel → north on Route 58
10:30-12:30 A central-area beach (Tropical Beach or Araha Beach) and lunch
Around 14:00 Cape Zanpa, Yomitan Village (30 to 60 min)
Around 15:30 Cape Maeda, Onna Village (about 30 min from Cape Zanpa)
Around 16:30 Break at Onna-no-Eki (about 10 min from Cape Maeda)
Around 17:15 Arrive at Manzamo (about 10 min from Onna-no-Eki)

These times are an example for a day when sunset is around 18:30 (early to mid-March, or around mid-September).

Sunset at Manzamo, and Staying in Onna Village

Manzamo, where a cliff shaped like an elephant’s trunk juts into the sea, is a famous sunset spot facing west. The official website also states that visits to Manzamo are allowed only until sunset. Arrive at least an hour before sunset and walk the path first. The admission fee is 100 yen (free for children under elementary school age), and parking is free.

According to the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan’s figures for Naha, sunset is at 18:16 on October 1, 17:48 on November 1 and 17:37 on December 1. In summer it is after 19:00, so the same course shifts by a lot. Before you leave, check the sunset time for your travel date.

So that you do not have to drive Route 58 in the dark for long after sunset, we recommend staying around Onna Village on night 2. Watch out for low sun in your eyes and for pedestrians and cyclists at dusk. For the table of sunset times by season, evening traffic and night driving tips, see our article on the Manzamo and Onna sunset drive.

Day 3: Churaumi Aquarium and Kouri Island in the North

On Day 3, leave your Onna Village hotel around 8 a.m. and head for Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium in the north. It is inside Ocean Expo Park in Motobu, and opens at 8:30. At the “Kuroshio Sea” main tank, there is a manta ray feeding at 9:30. Allow 2 to 3 hours inside, and the free dolphin show (at Okichan Theater) runs 5 times a day: 10:30, 11:30, 13:00, 15:00 and 17:00.

All parking lots at Ocean Expo Park are free. The closest multi-story lot, “P7”, has a 2.3 m height limit, so larger vehicles should be careful. For admission fees, closure days and more, see our 2-day northern Okinawa drive article.

The village of Bise, about 5 minutes by car from the aquarium, has paths lined with fukugi trees. The village streets are used by residents, so park near the entrance and stroll on foot for 30 minutes to an hour.

In the afternoon, head for Kouri Island. From the aquarium to Kouri Bridge is about 30 to 40 minutes by car, and the roughly 2 km bridge is free. Stopping or parking on the bridge is prohibited, so if you want photos, use the free parking lot at the Kouri Bridge South Viewing Area (Minamizume Tenboujo) on the Yagaji Island side. Kouri Ocean Tower, on the island’s high ground, is open 10:00-18:00 (last entry 17:30).

The Night in the Nago / Motobu Area

From Kouri Island to a hotel in central Nago or Motobu takes about 30 minutes by car. Many roads in the north have few streetlights, so aim to reach your hotel before dark. It also helps to decide where to eat dinner early.

In the north, gas stations become scarce once you leave the towns. Refuel once in central Nago, either on the evening of Day 3 or the morning of Day 4, and Day 4 will be much easier.

Day 4: From Nakijin Castle Ruins Back to Naha and Returning the Car

On the last morning, start at the World Heritage Nakijin Castle Ruins. It is about 30 minutes by car from central Nago and opens at 8:00. While it is still quiet in the morning, walk for about an hour along the undulating stone walls. There are many slopes and stone steps, so wear comfortable shoes.

From there, about 20 minutes by car south along the Motobu Peninsula, across Sesoko Bridge, is Sesoko Beach. It has very clear water with a view of Iejima Island; the swimming season is from mid-March to late November (planned), and parking is paid (1,000 yen per day for a regular car). Even if you do not swim, a stroll and a look at the sea is enjoyable.

To Naha on the Okinawa Expressway

From Sesoko Island to Kyoda IC is about 40 minutes by car. Take the Okinawa Expressway from Kyoda IC down to Naha IC. The toll for a regular car between Naha IC and Kyoda IC is 1,040 yen with ETC and 1,610 yen in cash (as of October 2026). The ETC discount is planned to run until March 31, 2027, and whether a car has an ETC unit depends on the vehicle. Please check when you book.

From Kyoda IC to Naha Airport takes about 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes. We recommend a break at Michi-no-Eki Kyoda (8:30-19:00) on the way to shop for souvenirs.

Refueling and Leaving Time Before Your Flight

The rule is to return the car with a full tank. Gas stations near Naha Airport can be crowded with rental cars before their return, so refuel soon after reaching Naha, with time to spare.

Cars can be returned only at our stores, and after you return the car at the Naha Airport store, we take you to the airport by free shuttle. Allowing for the return procedures and the shuttle ride, work backward so that you can return the car 2 to 3 hours before your flight departs.

8:00 Leave your Nago / Motobu hotel (refuel in the morning)
8:30 Nakijin Castle Ruins (about 1 hour)
10:15 Sesoko Island and Sesoko Beach
11:30 Leave Sesoko Island → to Kyoda IC (about 40 min)
12:15 Lunch and a break at Michi-no-Eki Kyoda → Okinawa Expressway to Naha
13:45 Refuel in Naha
14:30 Return at the Naha Airport store → free shuttle to the airport (example for a 17:30 flight)

Tips for an Easier 3-Night, 4-Day Drive

Rearranging the Order if the Weather Turns

Okinawa’s weather changes easily, and during typhoon season you may not be able to follow your plan. Nirai Kanai Bridge and Manzamo may be closed during typhoons or bad weather. Leave some slack so that you can swap days easily, for example moving the indoor Churaumi Aquarium earlier on a rainy day, or moving the sunset to another day if the sun will not be visible. Our response during typhoons is on our typhoon response page.

Luggage and the Inside of the Car

Changing hotels three times means more loading and unloading of suitcases. Do not leave valuables in the car while sightseeing, and keep luggage out of sight. After swimming, rinse off sand and salt at the shower and do not get in the car wet. For coverage in case of stains or damage, see our coverage page.

Refuel Often

A rough guide is three refuels: on Day 2 somewhere in Onna, Yomitan or Chatan, from Day 3 evening to Day 4 morning in central Nago, and in Naha before returning the car on Day 4. If you make a rule to fill up once the tank drops below half, you can drive on unfamiliar roads without worrying about the fuel gauge.

Frequently Asked Questions About the 3-Night, 4-Day Course

Can I shorten it to 2 nights and 3 days?

The simplest way is to drop the central area (Day 2) and visit the south and the north on separate days. The half-day southern course fits an arrival-day afternoon, and the north can be done as a 2-day drive.

Is it all right if I am not used to driving?

The Okinawa Expressway and Route 58 in the north are wide roads and relatively easy to drive. What to watch for is the morning and evening congestion in Naha, and bus lanes that general vehicles may not use at certain times. Check the signs carefully as you drive.

Will I have time to swim on Day 4?

You can swim at Sesoko Beach during the swimming season, but working back from your return time, the time will be short. If you do not have enough time, limit yourself to a walk and photos, and do your swimming at the Day 2 beach.

With 3 nights and 4 days, you can drive from the south to the north of the main island and see the different faces of Okinawa. What matters is deciding each day how far to go and where to stay. UMUI Rent a Car provides a free shuttle from Naha Airport to our store. We hope you will use us for your tour around the main island.

* Business hours, fees, swimming seasons and other information in this article are as of October 2026. They may change, so please check each facility’s official website before you go.
