You finally made it to Okinawa, and it is raining from the moment you wake up. With the beach out of the question, what do you do today? Okinawa sees its share of rain all year round, and the rainy season and typhoon season in particular can throw off a travel plan. But with a rental car, your options on a wet day open up considerably.
This article introduces indoor and partly indoor spots on the main island of Okinawa that you can reach by rental car, grouped by area: Naha, the south, the central area and the north. Opening hours, admission fees and parking details come from each facility’s official website. We have also added tips for driving in the rain and sample itineraries for days when the weather turns.
Before You Go: Planning a Rainy Day Drive in Okinawa
A Rainy Day Does Not Have to Spoil Your Trip
Okinawa’s rain comes in different forms. Some days it drizzles steadily; other days a heavy squall hits hard and stops soon after. Whether it rains all day or clears up at certain hours changes which spots you should pick and how you should plan your route. Before setting out, check the rain radar and wind forecast from the Japan Meteorological Agency or a weather app.
The best choices on a rainy day are indoor facilities that do not depend on the weather. Aquariums, museums and large shopping malls can be enjoyed as planned even in the rain. On the other hand, places where the view is the main attraction, such as lookouts and beaches, lose much of their appeal in the rain, so save them for a day when the weather improves.
Three Tips for Choosing Spots
Keep these three points in mind to avoid disappointment on a rainy day.
- Distance from the parking lot to the entrance: If you park at the far end of a huge lot, you will spend a long time walking under an umbrella. Check in advance whether there is a parking area close to the entrance, or a multi-story car park.
- Do not pack in long drives: Visibility is poor in the rain and driving takes more attention than usual. Limit yourself to two or three places a day and cut down on travel between areas.
- Keep a backup option: Your destination may be more crowded than expected, or it may close temporarily. Having one more candidate nearby will keep you from panicking.
Naha Area: Rainy Hours in the City
Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum

Located in the Omoromachi district, this facility combines a museum and an art museum under one roof. The museum covers Okinawa’s nature, history and culture, while the art museum shows works by artists connected to Okinawa. You spend most of your time indoors, so you can take it slow even when the weather turns rough. Parking is free, which is a real plus on a rainy day.
Opening days and hours vary by day of the week. It is open 9:00-18:00 on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, and 9:00-20:00 on Friday and Saturday, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. Because it stays open late on Fridays and Saturdays, you can spend the afternoon elsewhere and stop by in the evening. It is closed on Mondays; if Monday is a national holiday, a substitute holiday or Okinawa Memorial Day, it opens that day and closes on the next weekday instead.
| Address | 沖縄県那覇市おもろまち3丁目1番1号 |

Admission fees may be revised from period to period. Okinawa Prefecture elementary and junior high school students and visitors aged 70 and over, among others, get in free. Check the official website for the details.
Shuri Castle Park: Keep Your Visit Short on Wet Days
Shuri Castle is a sightseeing spot you explore on foot, mostly outdoors. In the rain the stone paths get slippery and you will be walking with an umbrella. The free area inside the castle walls has World Heritage sites such as Shureimon Gate scattered around, and in the Ouchibara area there is the Fukko Exhibition Room, which shows displays about the reconstruction. On a rainy day, it works well as a short visit focused on indoor exhibits.
As of October 2026, the main hall (Seiden) is not yet open to the public. The official website announces that it will open to the public on November 23, 2026. To mark the occasion, the park will be closed all day on Sunday, November 22 and on the morning of Monday, November 23. The site also says that viewing the interior of the main hall will require a reservation with a specified date and time. If you plan to visit from late November, be sure to check how to book on the official website.
| Hours | Free area inside the castle walls 8:00-19:30 / paid area 8:30-19:00 (tickets sold until 18:30), April to November. Hours differ from December to March |
|---|---|
| Closed | Closed all day Sunday, Nov 22 and the morning of Monday, Nov 23, 2026. Check the official website for other closures |
| Admission | The paid area charges admission (interior viewing of the main hall requires a reservation with a specified date and time; check the official website for fees) |
| Parking | Shuri-mui-kan parking lots (P1 and P2). 8:30-19:30 (April to November). Small cars: 500 yen for the first 60 minutes, then 250 yen per 30 minutes, with a daily maximum of 1,000 yen. Parking is limited to 3 hours. No advance reservations; when full, guidance to nearby private lots is provided |
| Access | Check the official website for directions |
The parking lots have limited space, and on rainy days more people arrive by car, so they can fill up. Since parking is limited to three hours, plan your visit with that time limit in mind.
Southern Area: A Full Day at an Aquarium or a Limestone Cave
DMM Kariyushi Aquarium

About 20 minutes by car from Naha Airport, this aquarium is inside the iias Okinawa Toyosaki shopping complex in Tomigusuku City. Because it is so close to the airport, you can also use it on the afternoon you arrive or to fill time before a flight home. It is an indoor aquarium you can enjoy in any weather, which makes it an easy pick for a rainy day.
Opening hours differ by day and are listed on the official operating calendar. The official site showed days with 9:00-19:00 hours as well as days with 9:00-18:00. Last entry is 60 minutes before closing. Admission is priced on three levels, “Value,” “Regular” and “Peak,” and the calendar shows which level applies on each day.
| Address | 〒901-0225 沖縄県豊見城市豊崎3-35 |
|---|---|
| Hours | Varies by day (check the operating calendar). Last entry 60 minutes before closing |
| Admission (individual) | Adults (18+) 3,100-3,500 yen, ages 13-17 2,500-2,900 yen, ages 4-12 2,000-2,400 yen, ages 3 and under free (three price levels depending on the day; rates from Oct 15, 2026) |
| Parking | Yes (about 3,000 spaces, free) |
| Access | About 20 minutes by car from Naha Airport |
Since it sits in a shopping complex, you can also eat and shop in the same building after your visit and fit the whole day into one stop.
Okinawa World: Gyokusendo Cave and Park Shows
Located in Nanjo City, this theme park lets you experience Okinawan culture and nature all in one place. Entry into the park begins at Gyokusendo, a limestone cave. Walking through the cave, watching your step, is an experience you can enjoy without worrying about the weather. According to the official website, everything outside Gyokusendo Cave is barrier-free, so wheelchairs and strollers can get around.
The park has the Super Eisa Show (about 30 minutes; 10:30, 12:30 and 14:30) and the Habu and Mongoose Show (about 20 minutes; 11:30, 13:30 and 15:30). Both are held inside a large tent, so you can watch them in the rain. However, they may be cancelled when a typhoon is approaching or when the wind and rain are severe. The park suggests allowing about 3 hours for a quick visit and 5 hours or more for a relaxed one, so arriving in the morning gives you room to see everything.
| Address | 〒901-0616 沖縄県南城市玉城字前川1336番地 |
|---|---|
| Hours | 9:00-17:30 (last admission 16:00) |
| Admission | Adults (15+) 2,000 yen, children (4-14) 1,000 yen |

| Access | About 30-40 minutes by rental car from Naha Airport (varies by time of day). The nearest expressway exit is Haebaru-Minami IC on the Okinawa Expressway |
Umbrellas are available for loan (with a deposit), but supplies are limited, so if rain is forecast it is safer to bring your own.
Linking the Two Southern Spots
Okinawa World and DMM Kariyushi Aquarium are both within 30-40 minutes of Naha Airport. However, visiting both on the same day is not very realistic, since each takes a while to see properly. A comfortable way to plan a rainy day is to choose just one, and save the other for another day or for the spare time before your flight home.
Central and Northern Areas: A Shopping Mall and Churaumi Aquarium
AEON Mall Okinawa Rycom

This large shopping mall is in Kitanakagusuku Village. It has a shopping arcade, a restaurant area, a food court and more, so you can spend the whole day shopping and eating. When you feel there is nowhere to go on a rainy day, the mall makes planning easy, and it is also convenient for trips with family or children.
It has a large parking area with about 4,000 spaces. Business hours and closing days, however, differ by shop. Check the official website for the hours of the shops you plan to visit before you go.
| Address | 沖縄県中頭郡北中城村字ライカム1番地 |
|---|---|
| Hours | Varies by shop (please check the official website) |
| Parking | Yes (about 4,000 spaces; check the official website for fees and conditions) |
| Access | Central area, easy to reach from the Okinawa Expressway and Route 58 |
Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

The classic rainy-day choice in the north is still Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium. In the Kuroshio Sea, a tank holding 7,500 cubic meters of water, you can see whale sharks and manta rays up close. A visit takes about 2 to 3 hours, and you can enjoy it as planned even in the rain.
The dolphin show at Okichan Theater is held on an outdoor stage, so it can be hard to watch in the rain. Check the official notices or the signs on site that day for the show status. For a detailed route around the aquarium, see our blog article on the two-day northern Okinawa drive.
| Address | 沖縄県国頭郡本部町石川424(海洋博公園内) |
|---|---|
| Hours | 8:30-18:30 (last entry 17:30); extended during summer vacation periods |
| Closed | No closures scheduled through March 31, 2027 (temporary closures possible, such as for typhoons) |
| Admission | Adults 2,180 yen, high school students 1,440 yen, elementary and junior high students 710 yen, free for children under school age |
| Parking | Use the Ocean Expo Park parking lots (all free) |
| Access | About 2 hours by car from Naha Airport (via expressway) |
Parking tip: The lot closest to the aquarium is the multi-story car park “P7” at the North Gate. Its roof helps keep you drier when getting in and out on a rainy day. Note that it has a height limit of 2.3 m, so take care with larger vehicles such as wagons.
Remember That the North Means a Long Drive
From Naha to Churaumi Aquarium takes about 2 hours even on the expressway. Driving in the rain takes more time and attention than usual. With more than four hours behind the wheel for the round trip, if you head north on a rainy day, build your plan around the aquarium with room to spare, and allow extra time for the drive back.
Safety Tips for Driving in the Rain
Visibility and Speed
On a rainy day, the windshield and mirrors get wet, visibility drops and the road surface becomes slippery. Turn on your headlights early, even during the day, so other drivers can see you. Slow down more than usual and leave extra distance to the car ahead. Avoid sudden steering or braking, and press the brake early and gently.
When rain falls as hard as a squall, you may not be able to see ahead even with the wipers running. Do not push on. Pulling over in a safe place and waiting for the rain to ease is an important decision.
Avoid Spots That Flood Easily
In heavy rain, water collects on low-lying roads and in underpasses (roads that dip under an overpass). It is hard to judge how deep the water is, so do not enter a flooded road; take a detour. On rainy days, also watch for rising water, rockfalls and fallen trees on roads along rivers and the coast and on curves in the hills.
If the Japan Meteorological Agency or other authorities have issued heavy rain or flood warnings or advisories, change your plans and spend the day indoors rather than forcing a trip. For our policy when a typhoon is approaching, see our typhoon information page.
Getting In and Out in Parking Lots, and Humidity in the Car
On rainy days, some parts of parking lots are slippery when you get out of the car. Opening a door while holding an umbrella can lead you to bump into nearby cars, so open and close doors carefully. Wet umbrellas and clothes bring moisture into the car and fog up the windows, so use the air conditioner’s dehumidifying function or the defroster to keep your view clear. If you are unsure how to operate something in the rental car, ask our staff before you set off.

|---|---|
| 10:00 | Arrive at Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium (about 3 hours) |
| 13:00 | Lunch near the aquarium |
| 14:00 | Leave, watching the rain, and head south toward the central area |
| 16:30 | Shopping and dinner at AEON Mall Okinawa Rycom |
| 19:00 | Refuel, then return the car or go to your hotel |
When It Rains in the Morning but May Clear Up in the Afternoon
When the forecast says the weather will improve in the afternoon, plan an indoor spot for the morning and decide in the afternoon whether to head to a scenic place. For example, visit DMM Kariyushi Aquarium in the morning, drive along the coast in the afternoon if it is sunny, or switch to the Prefectural Museum & Art Museum if it is still raining. The key is to decide on a backup. The weather does not always follow the forecast, so think ahead about where to go if the rain continues.
Frequently Asked Questions About Rainy Day Driving
Should I Skip Renting a Car on a Rainy Day?
You can still enjoy a trip around indoor spots in the rain. Public transport means more transfers and waiting, but with a car you can choose facilities with parking close to the entrance and move around freely. However, if a typhoon or heavy rain warning has been issued, put safety first and change your plans.
How Is Driving in the Rain Different?
Visibility drops and the road gets slippery, so the basics are to keep your speed down and your following distance long. Turn on your headlights early, avoid abrupt actions, and do not enter flooded roads. If you feel uneasy about driving, visit fewer places in a day and keep your driving distance short.
Can I Change My Reservation If My Plans Change Suddenly?
Conditions for changes and cancellations depend on your booking and the timing. How we handle weather such as typhoons is explained on our typhoon information page. For details, please check the information given at the time of booking or our rental agreement.
Rainy days in Okinawa offer a different kind of enjoyment than sunny ones, with aquariums, museums and limestone caves to explore. Choose your destinations to match the weather and move at a relaxed pace, and even a rainy day can become a memorable part of your trip. UMUI Rent-a-Car offers a free shuttle from Naha Airport to our branch. Please consider us for your rainy day travels.
