You want a swim in Okinawa’s blue water, but you don’t have time to drive all the way up north. The good news: there are several swimming beaches with white sand and clear water roughly 15 to 45 minutes by car from Naha Airport.
This article picks five beaches in southern and central Okinawa Island that you can reach within about an hour of Naha, and lists the swimming season, swimming hours, parking and facilities such as showers as confirmed on each beach’s official website. It also covers safety (habu box jellyfish and more) and etiquette for beach days in a rental car: getting in wet, dealing with sand, and parking-lot closing times.
How to Choose a Beach Within an Hour of Naha
The Five Beaches in This Article
In order of distance from Naha Airport, we cover Toyosaki Chura-SUN Beach (Tomigusuku), Bibi Beach Itoman (Itoman), Ginowan Tropical Beach (Ginowan), Azama Sun-Sun Beach (Nanjo) and Araha Beach (Chatan). All are swimming beaches run by a local government or a designated operator, with a marked swimming area, showers and changing facilities.
| Toyosaki Chura-SUN Beach | About 15 min from the airport. Habu jellyfish net and lifeguards. Parking: free for the first 10 min, max ¥500 per day |
|---|---|
| Bibi Beach Itoman | About 20 min from the airport. Parking ¥500 per car from April to October. Snorkeling is banned throughout the beach |
| Ginowan Tropical Beach | About 40 min from the airport. 7 coin showers. Swimming from the season opening until October 30 |
| Azama Sun-Sun Beach | About 45 min from the airport. A universal-design beach. Parking ¥500 per car |
| Araha Beach | In Chatan. In 2026 the swimming season runs April 10 to November 30 (November extension not yet decided) |
Travel times are the guidelines given on each beach’s official website (we could not find an official travel time for Araha Beach, so please check with your navigation system before you leave, as explained below). All assume no traffic; on weekends, holidays and in the summer holidays, both roads and parking lots get crowded.
The Swimming Season Generally Ends in Late October
The sea around Okinawa is beautiful all year, but lifeguards and marked swimming areas at designated beaches are generally provided from the season opening until the end of October. As of October 2026, the official information for our five beaches was as follows: Tropical Beach until October 30, Bibi Beach Itoman until the end of October, and Araha Beach until November 30 (a November extension was listed as undecided). Azama Sun-Sun Beach’s official site says “from the season opening to October,” but its official blog announces that the 2026 swimming season runs until November 8.
From November, many beaches no longer allow swimming and are used only for barbecues and strolls. If your trip falls in late October or later, check each beach’s news page for whether swimming is open. Even during the season, swimming may be suspended or interrupted on days with a typhoon, bad weather or a risk of lightning.
From the Airport to the Beach: What About Your Luggage?
After picking up your rental car at Naha Airport, you can head straight to the beach. UMUI Rent a Car’s Naha Airport branch offers a free shuttle from the airport and is open 8:00 to 20:00 every day of the year. If you have suitcases, either drop them at your hotel first or leave nothing in the car and take only what you need (more on valuables below).
Beaches Close to Naha Airport in the South
Toyosaki Chura-SUN Beach (Tomigusuku)

About 15 minutes by car from Naha Airport, heading south on the Oroku Bypass, this man-made beach lies beyond a row of palm trees. According to the official website, it has a net to keep habu box jellyfish out and lifeguards are always on duty. The beach is long, about 700 m, and swimming outside the designated area is not allowed, so follow the signs and the lifeguards’ instructions.
The management building has showers (¥100), coin lockers (¥200), toilets and a first-aid room. There are also a shop and a snack bar for buying floats and drinks. A rooftop observation deck and a beach volleyball court make it comfortable even for people who don’t swim. Marine sports with your own equipment, such as snorkeling gear or personal watercraft, are prohibited.

A multi-purpose beach next to a hotel, with white sand and emerald-green water. The official website says it is about 20 minutes by car from the airport. Besides the swimming area, there is a marine sports area, beach volleyball and soccer areas and a lookout plaza, so it suits a relaxed half day.

According to the official website, it is about 40 minutes by car from Naha Airport and about 30 minutes from central Naha.

A Scenic Beach in Nanjo: Azama Sun-Sun Beach
Azama Sun-Sun Beach (Nanjo)

Next to Azama Port, where ferries leave for Kudaka Island, this beach lists sunrises over Kudaka Island among its features on its official website, and you can enjoy the sea, land and an offshore island all in one place. The official site calls it a “universal beach” and describes facilities such as mobi-chairs and mobi-mats. In front of the beach there are playground equipment, showers and toilets, which makes it easy to use with small children.
It is about 45 minutes by car from Naha Airport, or about 20 minutes on local roads from Haebaru-Minami IC on the Okinawa Expressway. Beach entry is free; parking is ¥500 for a car and ¥100 for a motorcycle, with space for 350 vehicles. Rental items such as life jackets (¥500) and parasols (¥1,000) are also available.

Ukabi Island Tours and Reef-Flat Observation
At Azama Sun-Sun Beach you can also join a tour to the uninhabited island of Ukabi, just offshore, or a “inoh” (shallow reef) observation tour of the shallow coral-reef sea. According to the official website, Ukabi Island is about 800 m from Azama Port, about 3 minutes by boat, and is made of white sand and coral fragments. Tours and marine sports may be cancelled depending on weather and sea conditions, and the official news page shows each day’s status. Tours are booked only through the reservation form, so check ahead if you want to join one.
Beach Safety
Protecting Yourself from Habu Box Jellyfish
The thing to watch for most in Okinawan waters is the habu box jellyfish. Its bell is translucent, so it is hard to spot in the water, and it can appear even in shallows about 50 cm deep. Okinawa Prefecture urges swimmers to stay inside the net at beaches that have a net to keep habu jellyfish out, and to check whether there is a net before going to the sea. A net is not a perfect guarantee, so wearing a rash guard to cover more skin also helps.
If you are stung, the guidance is to leave the water immediately, pour vinegar (food-grade) over the area without rubbing it, remove the tentacles, cool the area and see a doctor. Do not use fresh water or alcohol, as they irritate the stinging cells. Okinawa Prefecture usually issues a habu jellyfish advisory during the summer months (check the prefecture’s announcements for the latest status). Stings tend to decrease from October, but the basics of swimming inside the net and covering your skin apply in any season.
Keep to the Swimming Area and Lifeguard Hours
All five beaches have a designated swimming area. The official guidance for Toyosaki Chura-SUN Beach and Azama Sun-Sun Beach states that swimming outside the area is prohibited. When you swim, do so within the designated area while lifeguards are on duty. Swimming hours change with the season, and in October swimming ends at around 17:00 to 18:00 at every beach. If you go in the afternoon, plan backwards from the closing time.
Children swimming alone is prohibited in the official guidance for Tropical Beach, Azama Sun-Sun Beach and Toyosaki Chura-SUN Beach. Parents should keep their eyes on children at the water’s edge. Please also refrain from swimming after drinking alcohol.
Sunburn and Heatstroke
Okinawa’s sun is strong even in October, and you can burn on a cloudy day. Sunscreen washes off with sweat and water, so reapply often and also use a rash guard and a hat. There is little shade on the sand, so renting a gazebo or parasol helps. Drink plenty of fluids and take breaks back at the car. However, a car heats up quickly, so never leave small children or pets inside while you walk away.
Etiquette and Tips for Rental Car Drivers
Getting In Wet and Dealing with Sand
After leaving the water, rinse off the sand and salt in the shower, and dry your body and swimsuit well before getting in the car. Sitting in a wet swimsuit soaks water and salt into the seat. Laying a large bath towel on the seat, and putting wet items in a plastic bag in the trunk rather than at your feet, will reduce the mess in the car a lot.
Sand also gets into the floor mats and door pockets. Before getting into the car, brush as much sand as you can off your sandals, feet and picnic sheet, and do it away from the car door. In UMUI Rent a Car’s compensation guide (Compensation), it says that if damage such as soiling requires the vehicle to be repaired or cleaned, the customer is asked to pay the Non-Operation Charge (NOC) as compensation for the business downtime. Please see that page for the details.
Parking Lot Closing Times and Small Change
Many beach parking lots have set closing times. At Azama Sun-Sun Beach the park and parking lot close at 17:30 (18:30 in July and August), and the official website asks you to “move your car before the park closes.” Toyosaki Chura-SUN Beach and Tropical Beach both close their gates at 22:00, which is later, but plan your return so you don’t miss the closing time.
Showers and coin lockers need ¥100 coins or small change. Tropical Beach’s management office also offers to change money, but having ¥100 coins ready saves you from waiting with your luggage. At Bibi Beach Itoman, showing that day’s parking receipt lets you come and go all day.
Valuables, Typhoons and Changing Weather
You can’t leave your wallet or phone on the sand when swimming, so coin lockers are the norm, but avoid leaving valuables in the car. UMUI Rent a Car’s compensation guide also lists damage to a vehicle from a break-in as a case in which the customer is asked to pay the Non-Operation Charge (NOC). The first rule is not to leave belongings where they can be seen.
On days with a typhoon, bad weather or a risk of lightning, beaches may suspend swimming or close temporarily. Before leaving, check each beach’s official website or news page for that day’s swimming status. UMUI Rent a Car’s response when a typhoon approaches is summarized on the typhoon response page.
FAQ: Beach Trips from Naha
Can I swim from November onward?
The official swimming seasons of the five beaches generally end around the end of October (Araha Beach runs to November 30, extension undecided). Azama Sun-Sun Beach announced November 8 for 2026. After that, some beaches are used mainly for barbecues and strolls. Whether swimming is open can also change from day to day, so check the official news just before you go.
Can I snorkel?
Of these five, the official websites state that Bibi Beach Itoman prohibits snorkeling “everywhere, including around the beach,” Tropical Beach prohibits “the use of snorkels,” and Toyosaki Chura-SUN Beach prohibits “marine sports with your own equipment (snorkeling, etc.).” Think of these as places to swim, enjoy the view and have a barbecue. If you want to snorkel, use an experience menu offered officially or look for another location.
What about Naminoue Beach in Naha?
Naha also has Naminoue Beach, but we could not confirm its 2026 swimming season, parking and other details from official information, so we have not included it. Swimming areas and prohibited activities differ from beach to beach, so check the operator’s official guidance before you go.
Some beaches are only about 15 minutes from Naha Airport, while on another day you might spend nearly an hour driving toward a sunrise sea. Swimming hours and parking arrangements differ by beach, so deciding on your destination and return time before you set out makes for a relaxed day by the sea. UMUI Rent a Car takes you from Naha Airport to our branch on a free shuttle. We’d be glad to be your wheels for a beach tour.
