Northern Okinawa in 2 Days from Naha Airport: The Classic Drive to Churaumi Aquarium and Kouri Island
この記事をシェア XFacebookLINE

Visiting Okinawa for the first time and torn between Churaumi Aquarium and Kouri Island, worried a day trip would feel rushed? Even on the expressway, the drive from Naha to the north takes about 2 hours each way, so two days and one night is just the right length if you want to see the sights at a relaxed pace.

This article walks you through the classic northern route by rental car from Naha Airport, along with driver-focused details like time planning, parking, and when to refuel. It runs in order from the morning of Day 1 to the car return on Day 2, so you can use it as your travel itinerary as is.

Get the Big Picture of the Route

Sample 2-Day, 1-Night Schedule

The success of a northern drive is mostly decided by how early you can get on the expressway on the first day. If you arrive on an early-morning flight and leave the airport sometime in the 9:00 hour, you can see both Churaumi Aquarium and Kouri Island on Day 1, then enjoy Nakijin and the Motobu Peninsula on Day 2 before heading back to Naha, all at a comfortable pace.

Day 1 9:30 Leave UMUI Rent a Car Naha Airport branch → take the Okinawa Expressway from Naha IC
10:30 Kyoda IC → rest stop at Michi-no-Eki Kyoda
11:30 Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium (about 3 hours including lunch and the dolphin show)
14:30 Stroll along Bise Fukugi Tree Road
15:30 Cross Kouri Bridge to Kouri Island and explore until evening
18:00 Head to your hotel in the Nago/Motobu area
Day 2 8:30 Nakijin Castle Ruins (go in the morning when it’s quiet)
10:30 Sesoko Bridge and Sesoko Beach
13:30 Drive south along the west coast on Route 58 → Cape Manzamo
15:30 Okinawa Expressway to Naha → refuel → return the car to the Naha Airport branch

The times are only a guide. Route 58 heading north, as well as roads in Nago city and Motobu town, can get congested on weekends and holidays. On Day 2, when you have a flight home, it’s safest to plan on returning the car to the airport branch 2 to 3 hours before your departure time.

Where to Stay

For your night’s stay, central Nago or Motobu town is the most convenient. Central Nago has plenty of supermarkets, restaurants, and gas stations, so dinner and refueling the next morning are no trouble. Motobu is close to Churaumi Aquarium and Sesoko Island, and many of its hotels have ocean views. There are also places to stay on Kouri Island and in Nakijin village, but many restaurants there close early in the evening, so decide where you’ll have dinner in advance.

Day 1 Morning: From Naha Airport to the North by Expressway

Setting Out from UMUI Rent a Car Naha Airport Branch

After you arrive at Naha Airport, take the free shuttle bus to the Naha Airport branch. If you complete online check-in beforehand, the paperwork at the counter is shorter and you can get on the road sooner. Before you leave, set the car navigation destination to “Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium,” and if you want to use an ETC card, check when booking whether your car has an ETC unit.

If you need a child seat, or plan to share the driving, request it when you book so pickup goes smoothly on the day.

About 1 Hour to Kyoda IC on the Okinawa Expressway

The standard way to head north from Naha Airport is to get on the Okinawa Expressway at Naha IC and drive straight up to the end of the road at Kyoda IC. Naha IC to Kyoda IC is about 57 km, and the toll for a standard car is ¥1,040 with ETC or ¥1,610 in cash. The Okinawa Expressway has a special discount for ETC-equipped cars, so it’s a real bargain if you have an ETC card (the discount is scheduled to run until March 31, 2027).

Along the way, Ije Service Area has restrooms and a shop, which makes it a good spot for a break. When you exit at Kyoda IC, you’ll merge straight onto Route 58.

Section Naha IC to Kyoda IC (about 57 km)
Standard car toll ETC ¥1,040 / cash ¥1,610 (as of October 2026)
Travel time About 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes from Naha Airport to Kyoda IC (without traffic)

Michi-no-Eki Kyoda (Yanbaru Products Center)

This roadside station sits right off Kyoda IC and is a popular first rest stop on the northern drive. It sells local vegetables and fruit, northern Okinawa specialties, and light snacks, and depending on the season you can even find pineapples and mangoes. If you’re planning to have lunch at the aquarium, just stop here for a restroom break and to stock up on drinks, and consider coming back on the way home to shop for souvenirs.

Parking is free, but it gets crowded around midday with tour buses and rental cars. It’s relatively easy to park earlier in the morning.

Day 1 Midday: Churaumi Aquarium and Bise Fukugi Tree Road

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

The highlight of the northern drive is Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, located inside Ocean Expo Park in Motobu town. The star attraction is the huge 7,500 m³ tank called “Kuroshio Sea.” Whale sharks and reef manta rays gliding slowly right in front of you is a sight that takes your breath away no matter how many times you see it. The area in front of the tank gets crowded, but if you step back a little and take in the whole view, you can really appreciate how big the tank is.

At the main tank there are feeding times for the reef manta rays (9:30) and for the Kuroshio Sea animals (15:00 and 17:00), when you can see them at their most active. Plan on 2 to 3 hours to see the aquarium. For lunch, eating at a café inside the aquarium or at one of the restaurants in Ocean Expo Park saves you the hassle of driving elsewhere.

Address 沖縄県国頭郡本部町石川424(海洋博公園内)
Hours 8:30–18:30 (last entry 17:30) *Extended hours during summer vacation, etc.
Closed No closures scheduled through March 31, 2027 (temporary closures possible)
Admission Adults ¥2,180, senior high school students ¥1,440, elementary and junior high school students ¥710, free for preschoolers
Parking Use the Ocean Expo Park parking lots (all free)
Access About 2 hours by car from Naha Airport (via expressway)

Parking tip: The closest lot to the aquarium is “P7,” the multi-story parking structure on the North Gate side (about 1,000 spaces). It has a 2.3 m height limit, so be careful if you’re driving a wagon or other large vehicle. All of the Ocean Expo Park parking lots are free, so even if P7 is full, you can park in another lot and walk through the park.

Dolphin Show at Okichan Theater

Right outside the aquarium, Okichan Theater puts on a free dolphin show several times a day. There are five shows, at 10:30, 11:30, 13:00, 15:00, and 17:00, and each lasts about 20 minutes. It’s an outdoor stage with Iejima Island and the sea in the background, so on a clear day you get the scenery too. Aim for the 11:30 or 13:00 show and see the aquarium before or after, and the schedule will come together easily.

Please note that the shows are canceled from January 4 to 9, 2027, for facility repairs. Show times can change, so check the official website or the on-site notices on the day.

It’s about 5 minutes by car from Churaumi Aquarium. In the village of Bise, lanes of fukugi trees, planted as windbreaks, run in a grid pattern. Thousands of fukugi trees, 10 to 20 m tall, line the lanes, and even on a hot, sunny day it feels pleasantly cool among the trees. When you come out the other side, the blue sea off Cape Bise stretches out ahead of you.

The village streets are residential, so park near the entrance and walk. The free parking lot at the village entrance has few spaces, and there are paid lots scattered around the area. People live here, so please keep your voice down and stay off private property. Plan on 30 minutes to 1 hour for the walk.

Day 1 Afternoon: Across Kouri Bridge to Kouri Island

From Bise, it’s about 30 minutes by car through Nakijin village. Kouri Bridge, which connects Yagaji Island and Kouri Island, is a free bridge about 2 km long. Looking down from the bridge, the shallow white sand shows through the water and makes it shine emerald green, a view so beautiful that you may find yourself gasping even as you drive.

However, stopping and parking on the bridge are prohibited. If you want to take photos, park at the free lot at the Kouri Bridge South Viewing Area (Minamizume Tenboujo), just before the bridge on the Yagaji Island side. If you walk down to the beach, you can see the bridge stretching straight out over the sea from the front. Drivers tend to get distracted by the scenery, so keep your speed down on the bridge and leave plenty of space between you and the car ahead.

Location 沖縄県名護市(屋我地島)〜今帰仁村(古宇利島)

Parking Free lot at the South Viewing Area on the Yagaji Island side (may be full when busy)
Access About 30 to 40 minutes by car from Churaumi Aquarium

Kouri Beach

Kouri Beach is right after you cross the bridge, on your left. With the bridge as a backdrop and a gently shelving sea, it’s a lovely spot even just for a walk along the water’s edge. Restaurants and souvenir shops cluster around the beach, so it’s also perfect for a break with shaved ice or a drink. There are parking lots nearby, but they get crowded on weekend afternoons.

Kouri Island is small enough that driving all the way around it takes only about 10 minutes. After relaxing at the beach, try driving toward the north side of the island.

At Teinu Beach on the north side of the island, two rocks lean together to look like a heart, known as “Heart Rock.” The shape changes depending on the angle, so walk around the beach a bit and look for the spot where it looks like a heart. It’s easier to get close to the rocks when the tide is out.

There is parking near the beach, but not many spaces. From the parking lot to the beach, it’s a few minutes’ walk along an uneven path, so comfortable walking shoes are better than sandals.

Kouri Ocean Tower

This observation facility on the island’s high ground lets you take in Kouri Bridge and the surrounding sea in one sweeping view from the top of the tower. An automated cart takes you up from the entrance to the tower, so it’s easy to get around even with small children or older travelers. Inside there’s also a Shell Museum with a collection of seashells and a restaurant, making it a good place to spend time until evening.

Address 沖縄県国頭郡今帰仁村古宇利538
Hours 10:00–18:00 (last entry 17:30)
Closed Open year-round (temporary closure in severe weather)
Admission Adults (16 and over) ¥1,000, children (6–15) ¥500, free for under 6
Parking Yes (about 200 spaces)
Access About 5 minutes by car from Kouri Bridge

After leaving Kouri Island, it’s about 30 minutes by car to your hotel in central Nago or Motobu. Many roads in the north have few streetlights, so try to plan your day so you reach your hotel before sunset.

Day 2 Morning: Nakijin Castle Ruins and Sesoko Island

Nakijin Castle Ruins

Start Day 2 at Nakijin Castle Ruins, one of the World Heritage “Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu.” Before the Ryukyu Kingdom was founded, this was the residence of the king of Hokuzan (the Northern Kingdom), and its highlight is the stone walls that run for about 1.5 km. The walls undulate like waves, and in the slanting morning light the shadows stand out sharply, making great photos.

The ruins sit on high ground, and on a clear day you can look out over the East China Sea beyond the walls. Plan on about an hour to see them. There are many slopes and stone steps, so wear comfortable shoes. From late January to early February, the cherry blossoms (kanhizakura) bloom, and during the cherry blossom festival the castle is lit up at night.

From Nakijin Castle Ruins, it’s about 20 minutes by car south along the Motobu Peninsula. Cross Sesoko Bridge (762 m long), which connects Motobu town and Sesoko Island, and you’ll find Sesoko Beach on the western side of the island. It’s known for water clarity said to be among the best around the main island of Okinawa, and beyond the white sand you can see Iejima Island.

The swimming season runs roughly from mid-March to late November (planned), and lifeguards are on duty from 9:00 to 17:00. Even on days when you’re not swimming, you can have a great time just walking along the water’s edge or taking a break at a beach shack. Parking is paid (¥1,000 per day).

On the way back, we recommend taking Route 58 down to Onna village before returning to Kyoda IC. Cape Manzamo is a scenic spot where a Ryukyu limestone cliff about 20 m high juts out into the sea, and the tip of the cliff is famous for looking like an elephant’s trunk. A grassy plateau spreads across the top of the cliff, and walking the whole path takes only about 20 to 30 minutes. In 2020, a facility with an observation deck, shops, and restaurants opened at the entrance, making it easier to take a break here.

It’s also famous for its sunsets, but on a day when you have a flight, don’t push it. It’s best to stop by while it’s still light out. From Onna village toward Naha, the quickest route is to get on the Okinawa Expressway at Kin IC or Ishikawa IC.

Refueling Before Return and Time Planning

Rental cars should be returned with a full tank. Gas stations near Naha Airport can get crowded with cars about to be returned, so leave yourself plenty of time to refuel. In the north, gas stations become scarce once you leave the towns, so filling up once in central Nago on the evening of Day 1 or the morning of Day 2 lets you enjoy the drive without worrying about the fuel gauge.

After you return the car, we’ll take you from the Naha Airport branch to the airport on our free shuttle bus. Count back from your flight’s departure time, including the return procedure and shuttle ride, and get back to the branch in good time.

Frequently Asked Questions About Driving in the North

Can I do it as a day trip?

If you limit yourself to just two spots, Churaumi Aquarium and Kouri Island, you can do it in a day. However, the round-trip driving alone takes about 4 hours, which is a heavy load on the driver. If you also want to enjoy Nakijin Castle Ruins, Sesoko Island, and Cape Manzamo, we recommend two days and one night.

Is it okay if I’m not used to driving here?

The Okinawa Expressway has two lanes in each direction for much of its length, and Route 58 in the north is wide too, so this is a relatively easy route to drive. Things to watch out for are the morning and evening rush-hour traffic in Naha city, and the bus lanes on Route 58 (lanes that regular cars can’t use at certain times of day). Check the road signs carefully as you drive.

Do I need an ETC card?

You can use the expressway without one, but the ETC discount on the Okinawa Expressway is big, making Naha IC to Kyoda IC more than ¥500 cheaper each way. Whether a car has an ETC unit may vary, so if you want to use an ETC card, please check when booking.

Drive two hours north from Naha Airport and you’ll find a more relaxed side of Okinawa that feels different from the central and southern parts of the main island. Not only Churaumi Aquarium and Kouri Island but also the roadside stations along the way and the coastal roads themselves are part of the fun of a northern drive. At UMUI Rent a Car, we pick you up from Naha Airport with a free shuttle to our branch. We’d love to be your wheels for your trip to the north.
