Looking for a short drive from Naha that fits in a beach, a stroll and a sunset? Simply heading north on Route 58 takes you past a retro foreign-housing district in Urasoe, a beach in Ginowan, and Chatan’s American Village and Sunset Beach. Together they make a half-day to full-day “central Okinawa coastal drive.”
This article covers five stops from south to north: Minatogawa Foreign Housing District, Ginowan Tropical Beach, Araha Beach, Sunset Beach and Mihama American Village. Parking and swimming hours are included only where they could be confirmed from official sources. We also cover evening traffic on Route 58, the bus lane rules and what to keep in mind when driving near US military bases, all from a driver’s point of view.
The Central Okinawa Coastal Drive at a Glance
A Half-Day to Full-Day Sample Schedule
You start in Naha and simply follow Route 58 north through Urasoe, Ginowan and Chatan, so it is hard to get lost. If you plan to end the day with a sunset, though, your drive back will overlap with the evening rush. Plan the day backwards from your return time, as this is the biggest key to finishing the drive in a relaxed way.
| 9:30 | Leave Naha and head north on Route 58 (works from either our Naha Airport or Omoromachi branch) |
|---|---|
| 10:30-12:00 | Stroll Minatogawa Foreign Housing District and have lunch (many shops open after 11:00) |
| 13:00 | Ginowan Tropical Beach (a walk and a break) |
| 14:30 | On to Chatan. Walk along Araha Beach and Sunset Beach |
| From 16:00 | Shopping and cafes at Mihama American Village |
| Evening | Watch the sunset, then head back toward Naha early |
The times are rough guides that assume no traffic. The official American Village website says it takes about 35 minutes by car from Naha Airport heading north on Route 58. Road conditions change travel time a lot, so check with your navigation before you set out.
Evening Traffic and Bus Lanes on Route 58

Route 58 is the main road running north and south along Okinawa Island’s west coast, and traffic tends to build up around rush hour. Between Naha and the Urasoe and Ginowan area, there are “bus-only lanes” that general vehicles cannot use in the morning and evening. According to a guide map published by the Okinawa Prefectural Police (valid from May 2, 2025), the restricted hours are 7:30-9:00 in the morning and 17:30-19:00 in the evening.
During those hours the bus lane is for buses, taxis, motorcycles and permitted vehicles, and general vehicles such as rental cars cannot use it. From 17:30 to 19:00, general vehicles may not drive in the bus lane. The rules are said not to apply on some days such as Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, but dates and sections can change. Always check the signs and road markings, and confirm the latest details with the Okinawa Prefectural Police Traffic Regulation Division (098-862-0110). We also cover bus lanes in our blog article on Okinawa driving rules.
Urasoe: A Retro Walk Through Minatogawa Foreign Housing District
Minatogawa Stateside Town
Along Route 58 in Minatogawa, Urasoe, there is an area of single-story “foreign houses” that were originally built for US military families. Today they hold cafes, bakeries, shops and restaurants, and the area is a popular walking spot known as “Minatogawa Stateside Town.” The streets of low concrete houses feel a bit like a town overseas, and it is fun to wander from shop to shop.
According to Urasoe Navi, the city’s tourism information site, there are no set hours for the area as a whole, and hours and closing days differ by shop. Many shops open from 11:00, when lunchtime begins, so a walk from midday into the evening is a good fit. If you have a particular shop in mind, check its details before you go.
| Address | 沖縄県浦添市港川2丁目付近 |
|---|---|
| Hours | Vary by shop (many open from 11:00) |
| Closed | Varies by shop |
| Parking | Several coin parking lots in the area. Parking at each shop is limited |
| Access | Nearest bus stop is “Minatogawa” on Route 58. By car, head north on Route 58 from Naha (travel time varies with traffic) |
Neighborhood Manners and Parking
Minatogawa Foreign Housing District is not only for visitors. Ordinary homes remain among the shops. Urasoe Navi asks visitors to stay out of any property other than the shops. It also asks you to keep your voice down, especially in the evening, and to be considerate of others when taking photos or video. The streets are used by children walking to school, so do not drive fast and do not take your eyes off the road.
The streets are narrow, and on some of them two cars can barely pass each other. Parking at each shop is limited, and it is said to fill up easily on weekends and at lunchtime. Use the coin parking lots in the area and do not park on the street. On unfamiliar narrow roads, drive slowly and let pedestrians and bicycles go first.
Ginowan: Ginowan Tropical Beach
Tropical Beach Basics

This is an artificial beach on Ginowan’s west coast near the Convention Center, nicknamed “Tropy.” The swimming area is enclosed by a net, and the official website says it takes about 40 minutes by car from Naha Airport and about 30 minutes from central Naha.
The swimming season runs from the beach opening until October 30, so as of October 2026 it is at the very end of the season. From November you cannot swim, and visits are mostly for walks and barbecues. Swimming hours are basically 9:00-19:00, but they change with the season, so check the official notices. The official site lists snorkeling and flying drones, among other things, as prohibited.
| Address | 沖縄県宜野湾市真志喜4-2-1 |
|---|---|
| Swimming season and hours | Beach opening to October 30, 9:00-19:00 (varies by season) |
| Park hours | 9:00-21:30 (gate closes at 22:00) |
| Parking | 180 spaces (one-way; crowded on weekends). Check the official site for fees |
| Access | About 40 minutes by car from Naha Airport, about 30 minutes from central Naha (official site) |
Before You Head Further North
The parking lot has 180 spaces and is said to be crowded on weekends. This route assumes an arrival around 13:00, but on days that look busy, leave yourself some extra time. Take in the sea, rest a little, then continue north to Chatan, which makes a natural flow. For more on each beach’s facilities and safety advice, see our blog article on beaches within an hour of Naha.
Chatan: Araha Beach and Sunset Beach
Araha Beach (Araha Park)

This artificial beach in Chatan Town’s Araha Park is known for its roughly 600 m stretch of sand, according to the town’s tourism site. The beach office has toilets, showers and lockers, and “Araha Parlor” sells shaved ice, snacks and drinks. Because it sits in the middle of town, it is easy to follow a walk along the sea with a cafe or a meal.
The 2026 swimming season runs from April 10 to November 30, but whether it will be extended in November has not been decided. Swimming hours end at 17:30 in September and at 17:00 in October, earlier than in summer. If you want to swim in autumn, an afternoon arrival can leave you short of time, so aim to get there early.

Chatan Park Sunset Beach

This beach in Chatan Park sits right next to Mihama American Village. As the name suggests, it faces west and is known as a sunset spot. A Ferris wheel and hotels rise right behind the beach, giving it a view where town and sea sit close together.
According to the Chatan tourism site, the 2026 swimming season runs from April 10 to November 30. Swimming hours are 9:00-18:00 in July and August and 9:00-17:00 in October and November. The beach office has toilets, showers and lockers, and there is also a barbecue area. Parking is shared with the rest of Chatan Park. We could not confirm the number of spaces or fees from official information, so please check with on-site signs or the beach office (098-936-8273).

Plan Backwards from the Sunset Time

Sunset times in Okinawa change a lot through the year. In mid-October, Naha’s sunset is around 18:00 as a rough guide (check an almanac such as the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan’s for exact times), and the gap between dusk and dark is short in autumn. Because October swimming ends at 17:00, treat swimming time and sunset time as two separate things.
The rules for walking along the shore or sitting to watch the sunset differ by season and location. Do not enter the water outside swimming hours, and follow the instructions of the managers. After the sunset, your drive back falls in the busiest hours on Route 58. One option is to eat at American Village next and wait for the peak to ease.
Shopping and Dining at Mihama American Village
Getting Around American Village

Mihama American Village, on the Chatan seafront, is a complex of shopping, dining, amusement and hotels. The official website lists categories for shopping, gourmet, amusement, services and hotels, and there are also a movie theater and a Ferris wheel. Besides outdoor strolling, there are indoor facilities such as the cinema, so you can work it into a plan for a rainy day too.
Opening hours differ by shop, and we could not confirm a single set of hours for the whole area on the official website. If you have a particular shop in mind, check the shop list on the official site or each shop’s own information. The official website also lists the Chatan Town Tourist Information Center, where you can ask for sightseeing advice.
| Location | 沖縄県中頭郡北谷町美浜 |
|---|---|
| Hours | Vary by shop (check the shop list on the official site) |
| Parking | Chatan Town Mihama Public Parking Lot (free), Chatan Fisherina Public Parking Lots (free for 2 hours, paid after that) and others. Details in the next section |
| Access | About 35 minutes by car from Naha Airport, north on Route 58 (official site). Turn left at the “Kuwae” intersection, or at the “Mihama” intersection just before it |
Choosing a Parking Lot (Free or Paid)
Chatan Town’s public parking lots were listed in the official site’s 2026 event notice. According to it, the Chatan Town Mihama Public Parking Lot is free (with gate closing times that differ by entrance), and the Chatan Fisherina Public Parking Lots 1, 2 and 3 are “free for 2 hours, maximum 500 yen per day, open 24 hours.” The Fisherina lots become paid after 2 hours, so if you plan a long meal or a lot of shopping, factor in the fee when you choose.
We could not confirm the number of spaces at the Mihama Public Parking Lot or its normal closing times from the official site. According to Chatan Town Office, closing times differ by gate, so if you plan to stay late, check the town’s official information beforehand so you are not stuck unable to get your car out.
Watch for Traffic Restrictions on Event Days
On event days at American Village, traffic restrictions or changes to parking hours may be put in place on nearby roads and car parks. Check the latest notices on the Mihama American Village official website before you go, and follow the instructions of police officers and staff on the day.
On days with night events such as fireworks, the area gets especially crowded. If you plan to stay into the evening, check the dates and any cancellation or postponement information in official announcements, such as the Chatan Tourism Association’s social media.
Driving Near US Military Bases
Fences and Gates
Along Route 58 and around Chatan, there are stretches where US military base fences continue beside the road. The inside of a base is not a place the general public can freely enter. Do not go inside a base gate or fence. Even if you get lost, do not pull into a gate to turn around.
Cars and pedestrians come and go near gates and on roads beside bases. Avoid stopping or parking in front of a gate, and do not point your camera at security personnel. When you take photos, shoot from public places such as roads and parks, do not cross fences, and follow posted notices. Please also refrain from flying drones.
Military-Related Vehicles and “Y” Plates
In Okinawa you may see cars with letters on their license plates. The “Y” plate is said to be used on private vehicles of US military personnel. On Japanese public roads these cars also follow Japanese traffic rules. There is no need to be especially wary when you see one, so just keep your usual distance. In the event of an accident, whoever the other party is, call the police (110) right away and contact UMUI Rent-a-Car as well.
The Drive Back in the Evening and Returning the Car
After sunset, Route 58 is especially busy because the bus lane restriction (17:30-19:00) overlaps with people driving home. In sections with bus lanes, general vehicles cannot enter that lane, so fewer lanes are available, which is one reason for congestion. Even on days when you have no flight to catch, plan backwards from the return desk’s opening hours. UMUI Rent-a-Car’s Naha Airport branch accepts returns from 8:00 to 20:00 (open every day of the year), and the Omoromachi branch is open 9:00-18:00.
The basic rule is to return the car with a full tank. Refuel with time to spare at a gas station in town before you return. After you return the car at the Naha Airport branch, we take you to the airport with our free shuttle.
Central Okinawa Drive: FAQ
Can I Visit Everything in One Day?
All five stops are in the central area along Route 58, so it is possible in one day. If you try to spend a long time at every stop, though, your drive back will land in the evening rush. On days when time is short, narrowing it to two stops, Minatogawa (lunch) and American Village (sunset and dinner), makes for a comfortable plan.
Can I Swim?
As of October 2026, the official swimming season for FY2026 is through October 30 at Ginowan Tropical Beach and through November 30 at Araha Beach and Sunset Beach (November extension undecided at Araha Beach). However, October swimming hours end at 17:00. Check each beach’s official notice just before you go to see whether swimming is allowed that day.
How Much Does Parking Cost?
As far as official sources confirm, the Mihama Public Parking Lot is free, and the Fisherina public lots are free for 2 hours with a maximum of 500 yen per day. We could not confirm fees or numbers of spaces for Ginowan Tropical Beach, Araha Beach or Sunset Beach from official information, so check each facility’s official guide before you leave.
Just by driving north from Naha on Route 58, you can see a retro residential district, white sand beaches, a town with a Ferris wheel and then a sunset. Settling on a relaxed schedule and avoiding the evening traffic and bus lane hours make the drive much easier. UMUI Rent-a-Car offers a free shuttle from Naha Airport to our branch. We hope you will use us for your central Okinawa coastal drive.
