Churaumi Aquarium Parking and Tips for Avoiding the Crowds
この記事をシェア XFacebookLINE

You’ve decided to visit the Churaumi Aquarium, but where should you park? And what if the lots are packed and the entrance is a long walk away? The aquarium sits inside Ocean Expo Park, and the park has several parking lots. Which one you choose affects how far you walk to the entrance and how smoothly the rest of your day goes.

This article is based on what we could confirm on the official websites of Ocean Expo Park and the aquarium. It covers the capacity and height limit of each lot, where to park depending on your plans, opening hours and admission fees, ways to avoid the crowds, how to get around inside, and nearby sights such as the Bise Fukugi Tree Road. The official sites do not publish crowd numbers, so we don’t give any guessed figures here. Everything is built around what the official sources actually say.

How parking works at Ocean Expo Park

All parking is free, across 9 lots

The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium has no parking lot of its own. Visitors use the lots of the Okinawa Commemorative National Government Park (Ocean Expo Park). All of the parking lots are free. The official parking list shows the following 9 lots (number of regular-car spaces).

P1 South Gate Parking 68 spaces. Nearest facility: the Tropical and Subtropical Urban Greenery Garden
P2 Parking 175 spaces (general vehicles only). Listed as nearest to the Oceanic Culture Museum, Okinawa Native Village, Okichan Theater and the aquarium. Use of this lot changes depending on the day
P3 Central Gate South Parking 169 spaces. Nearest to the coastal promenade, Okichan Theater, the aquarium and more
P5 Central Gate North Parking 101 spaces. Nearest to the same facilities as P3
P6 North Gate Front Parking 71 spaces. Nearest to the aquarium
P7 North Parking (multi-story) 1,083 spaces. Nearest to the Dolphin Lagoon, Sea Turtle Pavilion, Manatee Pavilion, the aquarium and more. Height limit 2.3 m
P8 Tropical Dream Center Parking 60 spaces. Nearest to the Tropical Dream Center and Sunset Plaza
P9 Emerald Gate Parking 153 spaces. Nearest to Emerald Beach and the aquarium. Height limit 2.3 m
P4 East Parking Large buses only

There are 1,880 regular-car spaces in total, plus spaces reserved for visitors with disabilities (source: the official Ocean Expo Park website). Note that the official list gives no height limit for P1, P3, P5, P6 or P8. If you’re driving a large vehicle, it’s safest to check in advance with the park management center (0980-48-2741).

P7 and P6 are the closest to the aquarium

According to the aquarium’s official FAQ, the lots closest to the aquarium are the North Gate Parking (the P7 multi-story structure) and the North Gate Front Parking (P6). If you park anywhere else, you either walk through the park or take the park’s tour bus (a ticket is required).

P7 is the largest lot, and on its first floor there is a free stroller and wheelchair rental counter (limited numbers, first come, first served). However, it has a 2.3 m height limit, so take care with high-roof vans or cars carrying a roof box. If P7 is busy, you can still park in another lot and walk to the aquarium.

Navigation settings and what to know before you arrive

Some car navigation systems can’t find “沖縄美ら海水族館.” In that case, the official guidance is to search for “海洋博記念公園” or “海洋博公園” (Ocean Expo Park). The map code is 553075797, and the phone number to search by is 0980-48-2741 (the park management center).

P7 has standard (slow) EV chargers: 10 on the first floor and 2 on the third floor. A full charge takes about 5 to 7 hours. Charging is free, but a free charger is not guaranteed and reservations are not accepted, so plan for the possibility that you can’t charge. From Naha Airport to the aquarium it takes about 2 hours by car using the expressway.

Where to park, by purpose

If the aquarium and dolphin show are your focus: P7 (or P6)

If you mainly want to see the aquarium and the free dolphin show at Okichan Theater just outside it, P7 is the default choice. It’s close to the aquarium and to the nearby facilities such as the Sea Turtle Pavilion, Manatee Pavilion and Dolphin Lagoon. Because it’s a covered multi-story structure, you also stay drier getting in and out of the car on a rainy day.

P6 is small, with 71 spaces, but it’s close to the aquarium. If it has room, it’s worth considering too.

If you also want Emerald Beach: P9 (and P7 later in the day)

P9 Emerald Gate Parking is the lot nearest to Emerald Beach and the aquarium. It’s handy on days when you want to fit in a seaside walk or a swim, but it has a 2.3 m height limit and only 153 spaces.

In addition, the park’s guidance says that on days when the aquarium has extended hours, if you visit the aquarium after 18:00, you should use the P7 North Gate multi-story parking. If you plan to enter late in the day, head for P7.

Central Gate (P3 and P5), Tropical Dream Center (P8), and large vehicles

P3 (169 spaces) and P5 (101 spaces) on the Central Gate side put you within walking distance of the coastal promenade, Okichan Theater and the aquarium. According to the aquarium’s official page, if you enter from the Central Gate, you pass the General Information Center (Haisai Plaza), turn right, and go straight north. P8 is the lot near the Tropical Dream Center and Sunset Plaza.

If your vehicle can’t fit under the height limit at P7 or P9, you’ll use one of the other lots. That means a longer walk to the aquarium, so leave yourself extra time. Large buses use P4, which is reserved for them.

Opening hours, admission, and the Wednesday partial-opening days

Opening hours and last admission

The aquarium’s regular hours are 8:30 to 18:30, and last admission is 17:30. It is also scheduled to be open over the New Year holidays, and no closures are planned through March 31, 2027 (apart from temporary closures due to typhoons and changes to hours due to weather, the animals or equipment).

Address 沖縄県国頭郡本部町石川424(海洋博公園内)
Hours 8:30-18:30 (last admission 17:30). Extended-hours periods exist (in 2026: April 25 to May 6 and July 18 to July 31, 8:30-20:00; August, 8:30-21:00)
Closed No closures planned through March 31, 2027 (temporary closures possible)
Facilities around the aquarium Okichan Theater, Dolphin Lagoon, Sea Turtle Pavilion and Manatee Pavilion are normally open 8:30-17:30
Parking Ocean Expo Park parking lots (all free)
Access About 2 hours by car from Naha Airport (via expressway)

The extended-hours periods may change from year to year. For the 2027 schedule, check “Hours and Closures” on the aquarium’s official website before you go.

Admission fees

Admission is 2,180 yen for adults, 1,440 yen for high school students, 710 yen for elementary and junior high school students, and free for preschool children (under 6). An annual passport costs 4,360 yen for adults, 2,880 yen for high school students and 1,420 yen for elementary and junior high students, and works out to the price of two admissions for a full year. The official site also mentions web tickets.

The official fee page says nothing about time-of-day pricing or evening discounts. With your admission ticket you can re-enter on the same day (show your ticket when you come back). You can step outside for lunch and return.

Wednesdays are “partial-opening days” (trial through March 31, 2027)

As a measure to deal with aging facilities, Ocean Expo Park is running a trial that makes every Wednesday a “partial-opening day” from July 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027 (if a Wednesday is a public holiday, the following weekday is used). The dates in November 2026 are the 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th.

On partial-opening days, the aquarium, Dolphin Lagoon, Sea Turtle Pavilion, Manatee Pavilion, Churaumi Plaza and Emerald Beach remain open. The Tropical Dream Center botanical garden, the Oceanic Culture Museum, Okinawa Native Village and others are closed. Parking is affected too: P1 and P8 are closed and P2 to P4 become bus-only, leaving P5 to P7 and P9 available. The park tour bus runs only on the round-trip route to the aquarium. If you’re going on a Wednesday, aim for P7 or P6 to keep things simple.

How to think about avoiding the crowds

What the official sites say about crowds

We couldn’t find any crowd forecasts on the official aquarium or park websites, such as “this hour is busy” or “this day of the week is quiet.” For that reason, this article does not give crowd figures.

The official information that does help with crowds is as follows. The top page of the Ocean Expo Park website has a guide to current parking conditions, so it’s worth checking before you set out or on the way. There is also the guidance to use P7 if you enter the aquarium after 18:00.

Thinking about timing: right at opening, and late afternoon

The aquarium opens at 8:30. The earlier you arrive, the more lots you have to choose from, and the easier it is to keep the walk to the entrance short. There is also a manta ray feeding at 9:30 at the popular Kuroshio Sea tank, so entering at opening lets you start early.

You can also visit later in the day. Some programs are offered only in the late afternoon, such as the 17:30 to 18:15 session of the Kuroshio Exploration (overhead viewing course) (times may change depending on the period). Keep in mind that the time before last admission is shorter, and you must enter by 17:30.

Thinking about days and seasons

There are no official figures, but as a general rule it’s safest to assume that long holiday periods, summer vacation and weekends bring more people to tourist spots overall. In those periods, we recommend building in a margin: arrive earlier than usual, and have several parking candidates in mind in case your first choice is full.

From a rental-car point of view, Route 58 heading north and the roads in Nago and Motobu can get congested on weekends and holidays. If you want to be there when the aquarium opens, a day trip from Naha means leaving early in the morning, so staying overnight in the north is also an option. For the overall route, see our blog article on the 2-day drive in northern Okinawa.

Getting around inside, and program times

The aquarium entrance is on the 3rd floor, at the “Coral Lobby.” Inside there are four floors: 4F “Invitation to the Ocean,” 3F “Journey to the Coral Reef,” 2F “Journey to the Kuroshio” and 1F “Journey to the Deep Sea,” designed so that you seem to dive deeper into the sea as you go. The main attraction, the “Kuroshio Sea” tank where whale sharks and manta rays swim, is on the 2nd floor. On the 1st floor you’ll find displays of small deep-sea creatures and the “Planetarium of the Sea.”

According to the official FAQ, the average visit takes 1.5 to 2 hours (this does not include time at Okichan Theater, Dolphin Lagoon, the Sea Turtle Pavilion or the Manatee Pavilion). If you add the feeding talks, the dolphin show and a meal, plan for about 3 hours.

Feeding times and the Kuroshio Exploration

The feeding times listed on the aquarium’s official pages are as follows (as of October 2026). They may be changed or canceled without notice depending on the animals’ condition.

Kuroshio Sea (2F) 9:30 manta ray feeding / 15:00 and 17:00 feeding of the animals in the Kuroshio tank
Tropical Fish Sea Feeding at 13:00 and 15:30
Kuroshio Exploration (overhead viewing course) 9:00-10:45 and 17:30-18:15. View the main tank from above, on the 4th-floor level. No reservation needed. Times may change depending on the period

There is also a paid “Kuroshio Sea” backyard tour (advance reservation required). From November 1, 2026 it is scheduled to switch to a “renewed” version with different content and times, so if you want to join, check the news on the official website.

The dolphin show at Okichan Theater and nearby facilities

The dolphin show at Okichan Theater, outside the aquarium, is free. There are five shows, starting at 10:30, 11:30, 13:00, 15:00 and 17:00, and each lasts about 20 minutes. It’s about a 5-minute walk from the aquarium exit, or get off the tour bus at stop “3. Okichan Theater.” The show is canceled from January 4 to 9, 2027, for facility repairs.

If you have time to spare before a program, you can visit nearby facilities such as the Manatee Pavilion, Sea Turtle Pavilion and Okichan Theater. These are normally open 8:30 to 17:30, so note that you can’t enter after 17:30.

About 5 minutes by car from the aquarium, the village of Bise has lanes lined with fukugi trees planted as windbreaks. Even on a hot, sunny day it feels cool among the trees, and beyond them the blue sea of Bisezaki opens up. A walk takes roughly 30 minutes to an hour.

The lanes in the village are everyday roads for residents, so park near the entrance and walk. The free lot at the village entrance has few spaces, and there are paid lots nearby. Please keep your voice down and stay off private property.

Emerald Beach, inside Ocean Expo Park, is a seaside spot near the aquarium, with the P9 Emerald Gate Parking nearest. In 2026, the official site announced that swimming began on March 31. The swimming season and hours change from year to year, so check the park’s official website before you go. Even on days when you don’t swim, a walk with a view of the sea is a nice change of pace.

A half-day plan centered on the aquarium

This is just one example of how to combine the aquarium, the dolphin show and Bise. Feeding and show times can change, so confirm them with the information on the day.

8:30 Arrive at opening. Park at P7 (or P6) and enter
9:30 Manta ray feeding at the Kuroshio Sea on the 2nd floor
About 10:30 Finish the aquarium (the average visit is 1.5 to 2 hours)
11:30 Dolphin show at Okichan Theater (about a 5-minute walk from the exit)
12:00 onward Lunch. With your ticket you can re-enter if you wish
Afternoon Stroll the Bise Fukugi Tree Road, about 5 minutes by car

Frequently asked questions about parking and crowds

Can I reserve a parking space?

We couldn’t find any information on the official sites about reserving parking. Parking is all free and works on a first-come basis, so it’s reassuring to decide on a backup lot in case your first choice is full.

Can I borrow a stroller?

You can borrow strollers and wheelchairs for free at the rental counter on the first floor of the P7 multi-story parking (limited numbers, first come, first served). They are also free to borrow at the park’s Bise Gate, South Gate, the General Information Center (Haisai Plaza) and each facility’s information desk. Strollers are not lent out inside the aquarium itself.

Can I leave and come back on the same day?

You can re-enter on the day you first entered. You’ll need to show your admission ticket when you re-enter, so don’t lose it.

With just a little thought about where you park and when you go, a visit to the Churaumi Aquarium gets much easier. Plan with some breathing room, including how you use the lots around the aquarium and the drive north. UMUI Rent-a-Car offers a free shuttle from Naha Airport to our shop. We’d be glad to be your ride for a trip to the north.

* Business hours, prices, and other information in this article are as of October 2026. The Wednesday partial-opening trial and extended-hours periods may change, so please check the official websites of the aquarium and Ocean Expo Park before you go.
