A trip to Okinawa does not always mean you need a rental car from the day you land until the day you leave. You may stay in Naha, spending some days strolling the city and eating well, and other days driving far afield.
If that sounds like your trip, there is another way to build it: skip the airport counter, take the Yui Rail monorail into the city, and rent a car in Omoromachi only on the days you need one. This article explains that approach and introduces five companies you can rent from around Omoromachi Station. Once you see how it differs from renting at Naha Airport, it should be easier to decide which suits your own trip.
Renting at the airport versus renting in the city
How renting at the airport works
At Naha Airport, the rental offices are generally outside the terminal, and you ride a shuttle bus to the office before picking up your car. The time it takes varies by company, and Nippon Rent-A-Car states on its official website that the shuttle between the office and the airport may take about an hour. It is worth remembering that you may not be able to get into your car right after you arrive.
How renting in Omoromachi works
To rent in Omoromachi, first board the Yui Rail at Naha Airport Station. The standard ride to Omoromachi Station is 19 minutes and 320 yen for an adult (160 yen for a child), according to the Yui Rail official website. Because you travel by train from the airport, there is no shuttle bus to wait for. When you reach the station, you simply walk to the rental office.
Note that there is no airport shuttle in Omoromachi. If you have a lot of luggage, or you arrive in the late afternoon, check the opening hours described below first.
What changes when you rent only on the days you drive
On days you spend in the city, a rental car just sits in a hotel or other parking lot. If you limit the days you rent, you reduce the number of rental days. For example, UMUI Rent a Car’s Omoromachi branch charges 5,500 yen for 12 hours or 6,600 yen for 24 hours for Compact Car A in the standard season. You can choose by day: 12 hours for a half-day drive, 24 hours for a longer excursion.

A sample itinerary
This is only one example, but for a 3-night, 4-day stay in Naha, a plan like the following is possible.
- Day 1: Arrive at Naha Airport and take the Yui Rail to your hotel. No car today; dinner in the city.
- Day 2: Pick up a car at Omoromachi Station first thing in the morning for a long drive. Return it in the late afternoon, within opening hours, back in Omoromachi.
- Day 3: Explore the city on foot, with no car.
- Day 4: Take the Yui Rail to Naha Airport.
In this plan you rent a car for only one day. On the day you rent and return, the most important thing to check is whether your return time falls within the opening hours. UMUI’s Omoromachi branch is open 9:00 to 18:00, so decide your departure time with the time you expect to be back from your drive in mind.
Five car rental companies in Omoromachi
No. 1: UMUI Rent a Car, Omoromachi Branch
We put ourselves first because we believe we suit a trip where you want to rent only on certain days and know the cost clearly. CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) and NOC (Non-Operation Charge) coverage are both included in the base rate, so no insurance fee is added at the counter. When you rent for only a few days, the per-day price becomes your total, so a rate that is easy to understand matters.
The Omoromachi branch has five vehicle classes: Compact Car A and B, Compact SUV, Station Wagon, and Minivan. Standard-season rates (as of October 2026, tax included) are 6,600 yen for 24 hours for Compact Car A, 8,800 yen for 24 hours for the Compact SUV, and 12,100 yen for 24 hours for the Minivan. In the peak season, Compact Car A costs 11,000 yen for 24 hours.
If you complete online check-in on your smartphone before departure, the pickup itself mostly comes down to checking your license and an explanation of the car. Booking and check-in are available in Japanese, English, Korean, and Traditional Chinese. The branch is a 3-minute walk from the station.
We will also be honest about our weak points. Our hours of 9:00 to 18:00 are one hour shorter than three of the companies below, and we do not offer one-way rentals. Payment is by credit card or electronic money; cash cannot be used.

No. 2: Toyota Rent a Car, Omoromachi Ekimae DFS Okinawa Naha Branch
This office is on the 2nd floor of T Galleria Okinawa (formerly DFS Galleria Okinawa). The official information says it is about a 3-minute walk from the station ticket gate exit to the 2nd-floor entrance. It is about 18 minutes from Naha Airport Station, and there is no shuttle or delivery service.
For a trip where you rent only on certain days, flexibility on the return is likely to matter. The branch page for Toyota Rent a Car says “returns from other branches accepted (within Okinawa Prefecture only).” If you are considering a one-way rental within Okinawa, please check the conditions and fees on the official website. Hours are 9:00 to 18:00. For coverage, the official website lists CDW at 1,100 yen per 24 hours and the Anshin W Plan, which also waives NOC, at 1,650 yen per 24 hours.

No. 3: ORIX Rent-A-Car, Omoromachi Ekimae Branch
This counter is directly connected to Omoromachi Station, on the 2nd floor of T Galleria Okinawa. Hours are 9:00 to 19:00, which suits days when you drive until the late afternoon and come back. One-way rentals are possible with both pickup and return on the main island of Okinawa (excluding The Busena Terrace counter), so its freedom in choosing a return location is on the higher side among these five companies.
Rates for shorter rentals are also listed. For departures from September 1 to December 24, 2026, they are from 4,400 yen for 12 hours in the SA class and from 5,830 yen for 6 hours in the SA class under the Okinawa Drive Plan. No. 4: Sky Rent a Car, T Galleria Okinawa Branch
This branch is next to Omoromachi Station and is entered from the 2nd-floor connecting passage. The official website says it is about 15 minutes from Naha Airport by monorail. It is open every day of the year from 9:00 to 19:00.
The company lists the “Rakuraku Return Plan,” which saves you the trouble of refueling before you return the car. If you rent only on the days you drive, you may worry about the time it takes to fill the tank before returning, so check the conditions on the official website if that interests you. There is also a campaign for free child seats for official-website bookings only.

This office is directly connected to Omoromachi Station, on the 2nd floor of T Galleria Okinawa. It is about 19 minutes from Naha Airport Station, and hours are 9:00 to 19:00 every day, including public holidays.
For coverage, the company’s official website lists CDW at 1,100 yen to 2,200 yen per day (depending on the class) and “Full Support,” which bundles CDW with a NOC waiver, from 2,200 yen per day. On one-way rentals, the office page says “returns from other offices only.” If you plan to pick up here and return to a different office, it is safer to confirm in advance on the official website or by phone (050-1712-2418).

Choosing by how you plan your trip
- You want to limit your rental days and keep the total clear: UMUI Rent a Car, where coverage is included and the daily price is easy to read
- You have a day when you drive until the late afternoon: ORIX, Sky, or Nippon, which close at 19:00
- You want to return the car somewhere else on your last day: ORIX Rent-A-Car, which allows pickup and return on the main island, or Toyota Rent a Car, which accepts returns from other branches
- You want a short rental of 6 or 12 hours: ORIX Rent-A-Car, which lists short-duration plans, or UMUI Rent a Car, which has a 12-hour rate
Things to watch when you do not rent at the airport
- Check opening hours on your arrival day. All five Omoromachi companies open at 9:00 and close at 18:00 or 19:00. If you arrive at night, it is safer not to plan on renting that day.
- Look into Yui Rail tickets. If you will ride often, there are also a 1-day pass (1,000 yen for an adult, valid for 24 hours) and a 2-day pass (1,800 yen for an adult, valid for 48 hours), according to the Yui Rail official website.
- Finish your pre-departure procedures. If you complete online check-in in advance, the procedure on the day is shorter.

Is it better to rent at the airport or in Omoromachi?
If you plan to head out on a long drive right after arrival, a branch near the airport suits you better. If you will spend many days in the city and need a car only on certain days, renting in Omoromachi is also an option. Hours and shuttle availability differ between airport branches and city branches, so choose according to your schedule.
