Want to watch an Okinawa sunset but not sure where to go, or what time to be there? The west coast from Onna Village down to Yomitan Village faces the open sea, and Route 58 runs right beside it, which makes it a great stretch for a sunset drive. But sunset times shift a lot through the year, and the sightseeing spots have their own viewing hours. It is easy to arrive too late and miss the moment.
This article follows a half-day route north along Route 58: Cape Zanpa in Yomitan, Cape Maeda and Onna-no-Eki in Onna, and finally Manzamo, one of Okinawa’s best-known sunset spots. It is written from the driver’s point of view, with approximate sunset times for each season, evening traffic on Route 58, tips for driving after dark, and how to get back to Naha on the expressway.
The Big Picture: A Sunset Drive Along the West Coast
The Route: From Cape Zanpa to Manzamo on Route 58

The idea is simple. Leave Naha around noon, drive north on Route 58, stop at Cape Zanpa in Yomitan, Cape Maeda and Onna-no-Eki in Onna along the way, and time your arrival at Manzamo for the hour around sunset. The sea stays on your left as you drive north, so you can watch the sun sink lower and enjoy the changing sky even while driving.
The key is to put the sunset spot last. If you see the sunset spot first, the rest of your stops will fall after dark. If you visit Cape Zanpa and Cape Maeda earlier in the day, you can wait for the sunset at Manzamo without rushing.
Approximate Sunset Times by Season
A sunset drive works best when you plan backward from the sunset time. Okinawa’s sunsets are later than on the mainland, and the difference between seasons is large. The table below lists the sunset time on the 1st of each month, taken from the 2026 data for Naha, Okinawa on the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan’s “Local Calendar” (Kakuchi no Koyomi). Sunset also moves by about ten minutes within a month, and Onna and Yomitan are slightly away from Naha, so real times can differ by a few minutes. Please use the figures as a guide only.

The times are when the upper edge of the sun meets the horizon. In summer it stays light past 7 p.m., while in winter the sun sets in the 5 p.m. range. The earliest sunset, in December, is around 17:40, and the latest, in early July, is close to 19:30, a difference of about 1 hour 50 minutes. Check the sunset time for your travel month on the observatory’s website before deciding when to set out.
Sample Schedule Counted Back from Sunset
Here is a half-day schedule starting from the UMUIレンタカー (UMUI Rent-a-Car) Naha Airport store, for a day when the sun sets around 18:30 (early to mid March, or mid September). Times assume no traffic, so shorten the list of stops or start earlier to fit your day.
| 12:30 | Leave the UMUI Rent-a-Car Naha Airport store, head north on Route 58 |
|---|---|
| About 14:00 | Cape Zanpa, Yomitan (30 to 60 minutes of walking) |
| About 15:30 | Cape Maeda, Onna (observation deck and cape views) |
| About 16:30 | Break and souvenir shopping at Onna-no-Eki |
| About 17:15 | Arrive at Manzamo (about 1 hour 15 minutes before sunset) |
| About 18:30 | Sunset. After enjoying the afterglow, head out early |
Travel times change a lot with traffic on Route 58. Evenings tend to be busy as far as Chatan and Yomitan, so leaving early gives you room to spare.
Early Afternoon: Cape Zanpa in Yomitan
Cape Zanpa Park

Cape Zanpa, at the northwestern tip of Yomitan Village, is one of the best-known scenic spots on Okinawa’s main island, with a long line of limestone cliffs. The park is open for free strolling with no admission fee. On windy days or when the waves are high, do not go too close to the cliff edge.
This is a stop for bright afternoon light rather than sunset. With nothing blocking the view from the clifftop, the sea is bluest in daylight. To make it to Manzamo before sunset, keep your visit to about 30 to 60 minutes.
| Address | 沖縄県中頭郡読谷村宇座 |
|---|---|
| Visiting | Free to stroll (no admission fee) |
| Parking | Free parking available |
| Contact | Yomitan Village Tourism Association: 098-958-6494 |
| Access | About 1 hour or more from central Naha via Route 58 (varies with traffic) |
Cape Zanpa Lighthouse (a Lighthouse You Can Climb)

The lighthouse in the park is one you can climb. A staircase inside leads to the top, where you can take in the view. According to Yomitan Village’s official notice, the visiting hours changed on March 1, 2026. Mornings are 9:30 to 12:00 all year. Afternoons are 13:00 to 17:30 on weekends and holidays from March to September, 13:00 to 16:30 on weekdays, and 13:00 to 16:30 from October to February. Last entry is 20 minutes before the closing time, morning and afternoon.
The important point is that the visiting hours end before sunset. In no season can you watch the sunset from the top of the lighthouse. So plan to visit the lighthouse during the day and save the sunset for Manzamo. For the admission fee and other details, please check Yomitan Village’s official website before you go.
| Visiting hours | Morning 9:30 to 12:00 (all year) / Afternoon 13:00 to 16:30 (Oct to Feb); Mar to Sep until 17:30 on weekends and holidays and 16:30 on weekdays / Last entry 20 minutes before closing (revised March 1, 2026) |

The Gateway to Onna: Cape Maeda and Onna-no-Eki
Cape Maeda

Cape Maeda is a rugged coast where limestone has been pushed up from a coral reef plateau. A round rock stands at the tip of the cape, with cobalt-blue sea below. It is known as the “Blue Cave” spot for diving and snorkeling and gets crowded on weekends. Even if you do not swim, you can look at the beautiful sea from the observation deck, so it works well as a stop on a drive.
Onna Village’s official guide asks visitors to swim at their own risk and with great care, and to always wear a life jacket or flotation device when snorkeling. In the evening the light fades, and it is not a good time to be in the water. On this route, just enjoy the view.
Parking is paid. Because this is a popular spot, the lot can fill up on weekends and holidays, and traffic backing up onto nearby roads has been listed as an issue in a report by Onna Village. Do not park on the roadside or wait on the road for long.

Onna-no-Eki Nakayukui Market
This roadside station and farmers’ market on Route 58 in Nakadomari, Onna, sells local island vegetables, fruit, crafts and sweets. It also has self-service snack shops, so it is a good place to take a break before the sunset. Choosing your souvenirs here lets you focus on the scenery at Manzamo.
Opening hours and closing days vary by shop and season. Please check before you go so you do not arrive to find it closed.

Tips for Stopping Along Route 58
The west coast has plenty of shoulders and small clearings with sea views, but stopping on the shoulder of Route 58 to take photos is dangerous. Drivers behind you may not see you in time, and it can cause rear-end collisions or contact. When you want to enjoy a view, always pull into a facility with a parking lot. Setting your next stop in the GPS in advance also saves you from hesitating at the roadside, wondering whether you can stop.
The Sunset Highlight: Manzamo
What to See at Manzamo

Manzamo is a scenic spot where a limestone cliff juts out into the sea, famous for a tip shaped like an elephant’s trunk. The top of the cliff is a grassy plateau, and the promenade takes about 20 to 30 minutes to walk all the way around. You face an open sea to the west, which is why it is also well known as a sunset spot. At the entrance, the Manzamo Surrounding Area Revitalization Facility has an observation deck, shops and restaurants, so it is easy to take a break.
| Address | 沖縄県国頭郡恩納村字恩納2767 |
|---|---|
| Opening hours | 8:00 to 20:00 (Mar to Oct), 8:00 to 19:00 (Nov to Feb) |

The hours and admission fee above are from the official website of Manzamo Co., Ltd., which runs the facility. Some travel sites online list different hours, so for the final word it is safest to check the official site or call.
When to Watch the Sunset and How to Walk It
The official website states plainly that “visits to Manzamo are until sunset.” Even in seasons when the park is open until 20:00, you can walk the promenade only until the sun goes down. Do not assume you can watch right up to the moment of sunset. Arrive 30 to 60 minutes before sunset and walk the promenade first.
The color of the sky changes slowly, from a little before sunset until a while after. If clouds sit on the horizon, the time you can see the sun may be shorter than planned. Even on a clear day, the sun can disappear behind a cloud just before it sets, so arriving early gives you some breathing room.
It can be windy on top of the cliff, and the grass and rock underfoot become hard to see as it gets dark in the evening. Do not go beyond the fences.
Evening Parking and Getting Around
Parking at Manzamo is free, with room for more than 300 cars across Lots 1 and 2. Even so, it can be crowded around sunset and on holidays. Expect to wait to get in, and arrive more than an hour before sunset to be safe.
On the way out, the area around the exit gets busy with everyone leaving after sunset. Decide in advance, based on your plans for getting back, whether to leave right after sunset or wait a while and enjoy the afterglow first.
Evening Traffic on Route 58 and Driving Back
Evening Congestion
Route 58 is the main road running north to south along Okinawa’s west coast, and in the evening it fills with cars heading back toward Naha. Chatan, Kadena and Yomitan in particular are stretches where commuter traffic and sightseeing cars tend to overlap. If you go straight south on Route 58 after the sunset, it can take longer than you expect.
In Naha, some lanes are bus lanes at certain times of day. Check the signs and road markings carefully so you do not drive into one by mistake.
Cautions for Driving After Dark
The drive back after the sunset gets dark quickly. Keep these points in mind.
- Turn your lights on early: In the dim hour, cars are hard to see. Even with auto lights, switching on the parking lights by hand is safer.
- Watch for low sun and glare: In the evening the sun is low, and depending on the direction of the road and curves it shines strongly from the front or side. Keep sunglasses or a sun visor in the car.
- Pedestrians and bicycles: Around tourist spots, there are people who came to see the sunset, and people walking in dark clothes. Slow down in stretches with few streetlights.
- Do not push yourself on unfamiliar roads: If you get tired, take a break at a bright place such as Onna-no-Eki.
Switch drivers if you can, and leave time to rest after dark.
Back to Naha by Expressway (Ishikawa IC and Yaka IC)
To avoid the evening traffic on Route 58, you can take the Okinawa Expressway back to Naha. From Onna Village, Ishikawa IC or Yaka IC is the quick way onto it. Enter your return interchange in the GPS before you arrive at Manzamo, and you will be less likely to get lost on unfamiliar roads after dark.
For the full run from Naha IC to Kyoda IC, the toll for a standard car is 1,040 yen with ETC and 1,610 yen in cash (as of October 2026). Ishikawa IC and Yaka IC to Naha IC are shorter sections, so the toll is lower. For exact amounts, please check NEXCO West Japan’s toll guide. The ETC discount on the Okinawa Expressway is scheduled to run until March 31, 2027.
Lane restrictions for roadwork do happen, so check NEXCO West Japan’s road information before you leave.
| Route | Manzamo → Ishikawa IC or Yaka IC → Okinawa Expressway → Naha IC |
|---|---|
| Travel time | About 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes from Manzamo to Naha Airport (without traffic) |
| Toll | ETC discount applies. Please check NEXCO West Japan for exact amounts |
Planning a Sunset Drive Around Your Return Time
The Naha Airport Store Closes at 20:00
If you return the car on the same day, keep the return time in mind. The UMUI Rent-a-Car Naha Airport store is open from 8:00 to 20:00 every day of the year, and the Omoromachi store from 9:00 to 18:00. Cars are returned only at our stores, and after you return it at the Naha Airport store, a free shuttle takes you to the airport.
From Manzamo to Naha Airport it takes about 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes even without traffic. For example, if the sun sets at 18:30 and you leave Manzamo around 18:40, you would reach the Naha Airport store at about 20:00, which is very tight. You also need time to refuel.
Same-Day Return by Season
From May to August, when sunset comes after 19:00, watching right to the end and then leaving makes it difficult to return to the Naha Airport store within its opening hours. In those months, we suggest one of the following.
- Stay near Onna Village and return the car the next day.
- Head back before sunset, and enjoy the sunset on another evening.
- From November to February, sunset is early, so even if you leave after dark, you are more likely to make the 20:00 return. These months suit a sunset drive.
Please decide your rental period when you book. The booking site is available in Japanese, English, Korean and Traditional Chinese.
Refueling Before Returning
The basic rule is to return the car with a full tank. Gas stations near Naha Airport can be crowded with cars being returned. There are gas stations in places around Onna, Yomitan and Chatan, so refuel on the way back while you still have time to spare.
Sunset Drive FAQ
Is it worth going on a cloudy or rainy day?
When the clouds are thick, you may not see the moment the sun sinks into the horizon. Even so, on some days you can enjoy light breaking through gaps in the clouds and the changing colors of the sky after sunset. On days when rain or strong wind makes the sea rough, however, it is safer to avoid the cliff spots. When a typhoon approaches, Manzamo may close. For typhoons, please also see UMUI Rent-a-Car’s typhoon policy page.
Can we enjoy it with small children or older family members?
Manzamo has a well-kept promenade that takes about 20 to 30 minutes to walk around. It is close to the parking lot, and the facility lends strollers and wheelchairs free of charge (for use at Manzamo and inside the facility only). Because the wind can be strong near the cliff, keep a hold of your children’s hands.
Is it okay if I am not used to driving?
Route 58 is wide and easy to drive. In the evening, however, it gets congested, and visibility drops once it is dark. If you are not used to driving, leave earlier so you reach your destination while it is still light, and head back at a comfortable pace after sunset.
For a drive to watch the sunset, “when you leave” and “when you get back” matter as much as “where you go.” Check the sunset time, the viewing hours at Manzamo, and the return hours of the Naha Airport store, then build a schedule with room to spare. UMUI Rent-a-Car offers a free shuttle from Naha Airport to our stores. We hope you will use us for your Onna sunset drive.
* Opening hours, fees and other information in this article are as of October 2026. Sunset times are the 2026 values for Naha from the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan’s “Local Calendar”.
